Nelson Mandela, the man destined to become the first democratically elected President of South Africa, was released from prison in 1990. Inspired by Mr Mandela’s selfless dedication to the fight for freedom of the South African people, workers at the Mercedes-Benz South Africa, East London manufacturing plant sought to pay tribute to a man who would eventually gain world icon status for his courageous leadership and his untiring campaign for peace and reconciliation. The car embodies the pride that the workers take in their craft, and is reflective of the pride that they felt for Nelson Mandela.
